Altäre bilden seit jeher das Zentrum verschiedenster Kulturen/Kulturstätten. Sie dienen hohen Würdenträgern dazu, ihre kultischen Handlungen zu vollführen, und vermitteln vor allem die jeweilige Ideologie, nach der sich alle anderen möglichst zu richten haben. Entsprechende Botschaften werden am besten durch Bilder vermittelt. Ein Altarbild beinhaltet meist das geistige Fundament (Gott/Engel/Heiliger). "ostendo tibi - ich zeige dir" ist der Versuch, das Altarbild zu thematisieren und neu zu hinterfragen.

Altars have always been an important arts center in different cultures.
