Unaufgeregte Alltagsmaterialästhetik, Wahrnehmunsverschiebungen, Irritationen des Sehens und daraus resultierende Bewusstwerdung von Täuschungsmechanismen sind charakteristisch für die Arbeit von Markus Wilfling. In der Entwicklung seiner Skulpturen, deren Ausgangspunkt oft Objets trouvées oder gefakte Readymades sind, treibt er seine Untersuchungen an der Absurdität der Welt voran. Dabei täuscht er aber nicht vor, ist nicht er es, der illusioniert, sondern er lotet die Möglichkeiten materieller Tatsächlichkeiten aus, in deren vermeintliche Wirklichkeit der Betrachter kippt. Erlernte Hirnfunktionen werden dabei in Frage gestellt, während sich gleichzeitig Erinnerungen verselbständigen und aus dem Lot gehoben werden.

The unexcited aesthetics of everyday objects, shifts in perception, visual irritations, and the resulting conscious realisation of the mechanisms of deception are characteristic of the work of Markus Wilfing. In the development of his sculptures, which are often based on objets trouvés or fake ready-mades, he presses ahead with his investigation into the world’s absurdity. While doing so, however, he is not pretending; he is not the one creating the illusions, but the one sounding out the possibilities of material actualities, whose supposed reality captures the beholder. Thus, learned brain functions are called into question, while at the same time recollections gain a momentum of their own and are thrown off kilter.
